A common misconception is that the more sweat you produce, the more fat your body will shed! This is not true. The fat layer does not melt away just because you sweat a lot in the gym. Your body’s main goal when it breaks into a cold sweat is to cool off. Sweating is also called perspiration and it helps maintain body temperature. The sweat glands are found all over the skin. When the body’s core temperature rises above a certain level, the brain sends signals to the sweat glands to begin producing sweat. The sweat glands release sweat through small openings known as sweat pores when they are stimulated. The sweat then spreads across the skin’s surface. Sweating is essential for cooling down the body. As sweat evaporates, it dissipates heat from the body, thus regulating the body’s temperature. Sweating depends not only on temperature but other factors as well, such as physical exercise, emotional stress and hormonal changes.
